The Irish people that came to America, were some of the luckiest to migrate because of the infamous Irish Potato Famine of the 1840's. Potatoes were the key food to the Irish diet and when the "potato blight" hit, it caused people to starve, lose their jobs, cause eviction, and even death. An article was released by the Cork Examiner in 1847, that basically said, "those who fled Ireland, were fleeing the scene of suffering and death." Most people thought this was a smart thing to do except for the Irish that didn't think of and suffered. Those who didn't think of fleeing were often begging for coffins to bury their dead family members instead of wanting food for themselves.
